ABOUT wayOUT NYC

On the night of wayOUT New York's first Gayla, a blizzard hit the city. Anyone who knows the impact weather can have on a NYC event can attest that it could be a recipe for disaster. However, that wayOUT magic carried us through resulting in a sold out event with a full turn-out! Nothing was going to keep New Yorkers from raising over $75,000 for wayOUT NYC's first grant recipient, Encircle in Provo, UT.

As the birthplace of the modern gay liberation movement, it should come as no surprise that New York welcomed the start of the second wayOUT chapter with incredible support and an even warmer reception. This success was followed in the chapter's sophomore year with a Gayla that raised over $100,000 for JASMYN in Jacksonville, FL.

From Gaylas to accupressure classes and yoga, wayOUT New York is fearless when finding new ways to fundraise for LGBTQ+ youth. Stay tuned to see what's in store for 2020!

Thank you so much to our 2021 beer sponsor NYC Kegs!

You never completely have your rights, one person, until you all have your rights. And I feel as long as there's one gay person who has to walk for gay rights, all of us should be walking for gay rights.

— Marsha P. Johnson

WAYOUT NEW YORK CITY X MSSC

wayOUT NYC has selected Mississippi Safe Schools Coalition as their 2021 Grant Recipient.

Mississippi Safe Schools Coalition works to ensure that LGBTQIA2S+, non-binary, and gender non-conforming students from across Mississippi can attain a safe and inclusive, high-quality education free from discrimination and bullying.

MSSC envisions a Mississippi where students regardless of real or perceived sexual orientation, gender identity, or gender expression, have equal protections and the opportunity to grow and learn in a safe environment.

In 2020, wayOUT New York City selected the first wayOUT Grant Recipient established in their home state, In Our Own Voices. In 2019, wayOUT New York City selected JASMYN in Jacksonville, Florida raising $104,000. JASMYN also celebrated their 25th Anniversary that year. The grant allowed JASMYN to fund and sustain their new Safety Net Resource Center, a third building on their campus which allows Jasmyn to greatly expand their programming and efforts to end youth homelessness in the area by offering access to hot meals, showers, laundry, and onsite case managers to connect youth to housing opportunities and health resources.

In their inaugural year, wayOUT NYC chose Encircle in Provo, Utah as their grant recipient. The $75,000 grant funded by wayOUT allowed the opening of Encirle's second safe space home with their sites on two additional locations in 2020. Their two existing homes, located in Provo and Salt Lake City, serve approximately 1600-2000 individuals each month. Encircle is currently providing 250-300 therapy sessions per month. Since Encircle's opening in 2017, not one of their youth has been lost to suicide.
